"RUA ALICE 75, Rooms for Rent"
is an oral history/performance project being developed in Rio de
Janeiro, Brazil. It will culminate in December 2001, with a Performance
Installation using the spaces of the building designated by the
title. Its historic purpose is to collect and present the ordinary
lives of the people of Laranjeiras, an old neighborhood located
in the southern zone of the City of Rio. Using the building located
at number 75 to represent several of the tenement buildings situated
in the area, the moving and colorful stories will portray both past
and present residents. Its artistic purpose is to use oral history
as a source for re-creating/re-inventing the history of the old
tenement building located at this address, which is today the home
for the Regina Miranda Actors/Dancers Company.

"One Step Ahead" -
A socio-cultural program developed in partnership with the City
of Rio de Janeiro. Through the creation and development of a young
professional dance company for people of African heritage, we intend
to extend the concept of dance to incorporate intercultural and
interdisciplinary perspective. In this way dance will appear not
only as a performing art, but also as a vital constituent of theater,
ritual and social life with political and ideological values organized
into meaningful form.
